Listen to a short sentence and type it exactly, word for word.

Method

While listening: jot the first letters / keywords of every word you hear.
Reconstruct the full sentence from your notes immediately.
Type every word — each correct word scores, even if the sentence is incomplete.
Check spelling of common academic words (e.g. "environment", "government").

When to use: Use for every Write From Dictation item. A method, not a scaffold. WFD feeds BOTH listening and writing scores and is scored per correct word — one of the biggest point-per-item opportunities in the test.

Worked example

Heard: "The university library extends its opening hours during examinations." → Note: "uni library extends opening hours during exams" → expand and spell each word fully.

Tips

Write EVERY word — scoring is per correct word, so partial sentences still earn marks.
Use shorthand while listening, then expand right away before you forget.
Prioritise getting all words over perfect punctuation (capitalisation matters less).
Practise spelling high-frequency academic words; misspellings lose the word.
